Honoring the Earth in Astrology: Reclaiming Our Planet’s Role in the Cosmic Dance

Astrology is often framed as a study of the celestial bodies—planets, stars, and cosmic forces—moving through the vastness of space. Yet, in all this discussion of cosmic influence, one vital presence is often overlooked: Earth. We talk about astrology as if we are only observers looking outward, as if the planets beyond us are active forces while Earth is merely the stage upon which they act. But Earth is not just a setting. She is a living celestial body too, an organism with Her own rhythms, cycles, and relationships with the planets that orbit alongside.

Recognizing Earth as an astrological entity shifts our entire perspective on astrology. It invites us to deepen our awareness of our relationship with the planet beneath our feet, as well as with the sun above our heads. It reminds us that we are not separate from the cosmos but are intricately woven into the celestial fabric. The same planetary forces that influence our lives also influence the life of the Earth Herself. Then she, in turn, influences us as well. And we influence her too, by the choices that we make every day; the intentions that we follow through on.

The Earth as More Than an Observational Point

Traditional geocentric astrology places Earth at the center because it is our vantage point. From here, we measure the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets, interpreting how their energies manifest in our lives. However, this geocentric framework, while valuable, often neglects the truth that Earth is as much a player in astrology as is any other planet, while also, by way of the miraculous nature of Earth's inheritance, recreation, sustenance, and transformation of life... being the single most special and most darling planet to our day-to-day lives.

If we look at astrology purely from an observational perspective, and not from one where we are seeing a bigger picture than previously perceived at our previous limits, we risk falling into a mindset that detaches us from the very world we inhabit. We may become so fixated on the influences of Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the outer planets that we forget that Earth, too, has a soul. She has a personality. She has aspects and relationships with the planets, just as they have with each other.

So how do we honor the Earth in astrology in a way that truly acknowledges Her as an active participant in the cosmic energy flow rather than just a passive setting?

Embracing the Heliocentric Chart: A Path to Our Earth Sign

One way to realign our astrology with the truth of Earth's significance is by studying the heliocentric chart. Heliocentric astrology places the Sun at the center, recognizing that all planets—including Earth—move in orbit around our star, the Sun. In this framework, the Earth takes Her rightful place as a planetary body in motion, with Her own energy and significance.

From a heliocentric perspective, each of us has an Earth sign—always exactly opposite our Sun sign in the zodiac. If your Sun sign is Aries, your Earth sign is Libra. If your Sun sign is Capricorn, your Earth sign is Cancer. This opposition is not incidental—it forms the Earth-Sun Axis, a fundamental polarity that represents the balance of the part of ourself that is free to give of itself freely (the Sun), and the part of ourself that is free to receive of itself freely (the Earth). I call this axis the axis of life.

The Earth sign speaks to how we root ourselves in the physical world. It reveals how we interact with nature, how we integrate cosmic wisdom into material existence, and how we harmonize with the rhythms of the planet. While the Sun represents our conscious will, the Earth sign symbolizes the foundation upon which that will acts, which is Love. It is our embodied wisdom, the way we ground celestial energy into practical, lived experience.

The Earth-Sun Axis: The Foundation of All Astrology

All astrology is built upon the Earth-Sun axis. The Sun is the great life-giver, the source of all known light and energy in our system, and Earth is the sacred ground where this energy manifests as matter. Every planetary transit we interpret, and every zodiacal season we experience are all filtered through this fundamental relationship.

Understanding our Earth sign deepens our understanding of balance. While the Sun represents the conscious identity we radiate outward, the Earth sign represents the unconscious wisdom we embody. If the Sun is the light of our awareness, then the Earth is the soil in which that awareness is planted.

For instance, someone with a Sun in Leo has an Earth sign in Aquarius. This suggests that while they express themselves boldly and passionately, their true foundation is in collective awareness, innovation, and humanitarian ideals. Their growth is not only about self-expression (Leo) but also about understanding their role within the greater whole (Aquarius) and there's a certain balance that these two signs strike that is always so fascinating.

Observing Earth's Aspects with Other Planets

To further honor Earth's presence in astrology, we can study Her aspects with the other planets. Just as we examine how Mars squares Venus or how Saturn trines Uranus, we can observe how Earth interacts with the celestial bodies around Her. These aspects can reveal insights about humanity’s collective evolution, our relationship with nature, and the energetic currents shaping the material world.

What I really mean is, that by studying the heliocentric chart,we perceive our point of view from the centered perspective, which can come to represent the divine perspective... the one Whom all other characters seem to orbit around...

but also,

there's an Earthen side to this, too. With the heliocentric chart, we physically move throughout the chart, on Earth.

Heliocentric aspects can greatly correspond to massive life-changes.

For example, if Earth forms a conjunction with Jupiter in a heliocentric chart, this may indicate a time of profound expansion in our relationship with nature, resources, the universal inner child, and/or global consciousness. If Earth squares Neptune, we might collectively grapple with illusions about our environment, struggling to discern truth from deception regarding ecological matters. Both of these planetary cycles should be paid attention to as well, for, one benefit of moving forward through time until realizing that time does not exist, is that we can compare our histories, past versions of ourselves... 12 year orbit for Jupiter, and 165 year orbit for Neptune... that means Neptune spends about 14 years in each of the signs. So, it would also make sense and be wise for one to pay attention to the planetary aspects that are happening in their heliocentric charts, to the planet Earth.

I will create another blog post on here, upcoming, where I talk about my own most exact Earthen aspects, or major aspects (including quintiles, bQ, septiles, noviles) that come within 2 degrees of exactitude with the Earth. For that article, I'm noting now that I will surely need to share my aspects/harmonics/particle/wave table on it's own page as well. Maybe create a RESOURCES tab on here... Yeah. And as I channel and grow my audience, the resources will grow too.

But right now, on March 25th 2025, the Earth and Moon are conjunct within 2 degrees to Venus and Mercury. Venus and Mercury are right before them, sort of leading them into the plane of Libra-Pisces. And in the geocentric chart, we can see that a similar thing is happening with Venus and Mercury and the Sun in Aries. It is as if the planets are forming a long chain and their aspects each ignite the next ones.

By tuning into Earth’s aspects, we develop a more intimate awareness of Her cycles, allowing us to align our lives more deeply with the wisdom of the natural world. And by paying attention to the nuances in Eart's cycles... even the relationships that the geocentric chart has to the heliocentric... a whole conversation is had with Earth. She's so beautiful.

Living in Harmony with Earth’s Cycles

Honoring the Earth in astrology is not just an intellectual exercise—it is a practice that calls us to live in greater harmony with Her rhythms. The main truth that I am interested in uncovering is the attention paid to Earth as a planetary body that, as far as we know, orbits a star (the Sun), and that has been in a relationship with that star that creates, sustains, and evolves life itself.

Essentially, this is the admitting that everything we see and experience has its root in miracle. Not as a noun, but a verb… not an effect, but a cause. In the same way that the Earth gives the Sun purpose, so too, do I strive to give myself purpose in translating the languages of the heavens, and recalling them as family. This can also mean observing the solstices and equinoxes; recognizing them not just as seasonal markers but as celestial alignments that influence our inner and outer lives. It can mean honoring the nature of an eclipse. It can also mean tuning into the lunar cycles, understanding that the Moon’s dance with Earth affects our emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.

It also means paying attention to planetary retrogrades from a more Earthen perspective. While we often focus on how retrogrades affect us personally, we can also ask: How do these shifts impact Earth Herself...? Like... as a life-form? What wisdom is She offering during these times of Her own recalibration?

Reclaiming Earth’s Sacred Role in Astrology

To truly integrate Earth into our astrological practice, we must shift our mindset from one of detachment to one of relationship. And yet, and also... from one of collectivism to one of relationship as well. When I speak of 'we', I speak for the entire human populace on/in the Earth at this time. 'Relationship' itself may be seen harmoniously as the true and sound neutral; not striving for connection to the point of enmeshment... and neither diving within to the point of stubbornness... but somehow, straddling the line of those two with authenticity.

The Earth, in astrology, is ALL about the golden elixir of life itself, that IS authenticity.

Earth is all about our inner children, the parts of us that are so magical, indeed, that our magic begins to weave its own stories, and those stories, their own, and so on and so forth... throughout the generations.

And I feel that Earth is urging us (you and I) to connect with Her now. Even if it's just a moment you have for a split second between work, to just take 3-5 minutes, close your eyes, listen to some music that makes you think about Earth, and relax your body in the gratitude for the ultimate miracle of life itself, which IS the miracle.

So, (also), for EVERYONE... our 'miracles' (in quotes because they are often alluded to in the future, falsely...) have already happened. They were our conceptions, the transmigrations of our souls, our births, our awakenedness, our learningness that becomes learnedness only for a split second before becoming learningness once more...

Earth is not just where astrology happens—She is part of the conversation. She is a teacher, a guide, a cosmic force in Her own right, with Her own lessons to share.

And She is literally you, (in your chart). She is where YOU are in your chart, and I have always found that interesting... like looking at our individual person souls as correspondent representatives for the soul of the planet...? That's how I see it. Because, also, everything about Earth is a miracle too, like... She built FROM Miracle, FOR Miracle, and WITH Miracle in mind, heart, soul, and Spirit... which is actually an available and natural resonance for every human being on this planet to tap into, should they so choose to do the work to really accept the truth that they are the literal Omniverse and Omnibeing.

There's more family in the dark nights of the soul, when you accept this fact. It's seriously SO much like that Mary Oliver poem, 'Wild Geese' (look it up).

Reclaiming Earth's role in astrology invites us to become stewards of planetary wisdom. It calls us to listen to Her, to recognize that just as we are shaped by the stars, we are also shaped by the soil, the rivers, the mountains, and the winds. It reminds us that astrology is not only about celestial knowledge but about embodied Earthly wisdom—the wisdom of being present, of grounding the heavens into the Earth (I Ching 11 - T'ai - Peace), of living in sacred reciprocity with the planet we call home.

The next time you cast a chart, consider looking at your Earth sign in the heliocentric interpretation. Observe Her aspects. Tune into Her cycles. Let astrology not only be a study of the sky but a practice that roots you more deeply into the living consciousness of Earth Herself, the being with so big a heart, we all call it home.
